Mapping the meaning of the be riŋ formation in Basse Mandi Mapping the meaning of the be riŋ formation in Basse Mandinka

The present paper describes the meaning of the BE RIŊ formation (a gram formed by means of the non-verbal predicator be and a participle in -riŋ) in a regional variety of Gambian Mandinka spoken in Basse in the Upper River Region. Employing principles of cognitive linguistics, the author defines the semantic potential of the construction as a complex network of the following “basic” senses: resultative-stative, stative, progressive-continuous and inclusive perfect – values that may be encountered within present and past temporal frames and that also connote the idea of actual, extended or permanent relevance. Additionally, making use of typological and diachronic universals that govern the grammatical life of resultative categories (such as the BE RIŊ gram, itself), these senses – components of the semantic network of the locution – are chained and arranged into a logical map that reflects a plausible historical progression.
