Typology of Leteh (Larteh) restricted verbal cla Typology of Leteh (Larteh) restricted verbal clauses

This paper describes the structure of five types of restricted verbal clauses that operate
in Leteh (Kwa: Ghana). The verbs gyi and b which link the subject and the predicative
element have constrained verbal properties; they exhibit irregular tense/aspectual forms and
negation forms. Although they inflect for negation, b for instance, does so, far differently from
other lexical verbs in Leteh. While gyí is employed in adjectival and nominal predications, b is
used in locative predications. The types of Leteh restricted verbal clauses which are described
are ascriptive, identificational, predicate locative, existential and ambient clauses. Each type
presents some structural and semantic differences; for example, the existential clause states or
acknowledges the existence of an entity, whereas the predicate locative gives information about
its location at a particular point in time. The study adds to our knowledge on the typology of
clauses.

A titre
