Copular Clauses in Kin Copular Clauses in Kinande

This paper presents a study of (a) predicational, (b) specificational, (c) identificational, and (d) equative copular clauses in Kinande. Initial inspection of the data would suggest that Kinande has copulas specialized for various semantic types of copular clauses: with one copula being used in predicational clauses and the other copula being used for specificational, identificational, and equatives clauses. Careful investigation reveals that there is not a perfect match between form and semantic function in copular clauses in Kinande. Instead, the choice of copula is governed by the ability of the noun phrase that is in semantic focus to undergo agreement. This study also sheds light on the distribution of augmented noun phrases in Kinande, which are observed to be not allowed anywhere that a predicate is required. Finally, copular clauses are approached here from the perspective of a well-known taxonomy that has been primarily used to study copular clauses in Indo-European languages. Therefore, this work lends itself as a resource to research that examines copulas from either an historical or cross-linguistic perspective.
