This paper sets out to investigate the morphosyntactic and semantic curiosities of Lmnsʔ names. Its objective is to show the norms and values as expressed in the naming patterns of the Nsʔ people. Two questions guided our analysis: What are the linguistic structures of Lmnsʔ names? Are names given at random or are they related to the events surrounding the birth of a child? Two hundred names were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews from Nsʔ natives of two meeting houses in Kumbo: NASU (Bambili branch) and Bongnavti (Tobin branch) meeting houses. These data were analyzed in the frameworks of Onomastics (Crystal, 1985) and Ethnolinguistics (Sapir, 1921). Findings disclose that Lmnsʔ names are noun phrases, verb phrases and sentences. They also show that Lmnsʔ names express the cultural beliefs of the Nsʔ people and are closely related to the events surrounding the birth of the name bearer and the way name givers reacted to them.
