This paper focuses on the marker ɖu. (“eat”) that is classified among stative verbs in Ewe, a language spoken mainly in Ghana and in Togo. The problems related to this marker are multifold in that the syntactic constructions in which it occurs vary tremendously and the semantic values of its different uses do not seem to be closely related. Given these difficulties, the approach adopted in this paper consists of finding out the regularities of each syntactic construction and subsequently proposing a mechanism that enables us to determine the overall function of ɖu.
